Understanding Twist: How Much and Why It Matters
Twist is the foundation of yarn—it's what transforms loose fibers into strong, cohesive thread. Yet twist remains one of the most misunderstood aspects of spinning. Too much twist creates wiry, kinky yarn. Too little creates weak yarn that falls apart. Understanding twist—how much to add, which direction, and why it matters—transforms you from someone who makes yarn into someone who engineers it.
What is Twist?
Twist is the spiral rotation of fibers around each other. When you spin, you're adding twist that locks fibers together, creating strength and structure. The amount of twist, its direction, and how it's distributed determine your yarn's character, performance, and appearance.
Twist is measured in twists per inch (TPI)—literally how many complete spirals occur in one inch of yarn. Fine yarns need more TPI than thick yarns to achieve the same strength. A lace-weight yarn might have 12-15 TPI, while a bulky yarn might have only 3-5 TPI.
Z-Twist vs. S-Twist
Twist direction matters for both singles and plied yarn. Z-twist (the most common) spirals upward to the right, like the center diagonal of the letter Z. S-twist spirals upward to the left, like the center diagonal of the letter S.
Most spinners create Z-twist singles by spinning clockwise. When you ply two Z-twist singles together with counterclockwise twist, you create S-twist plied yarn. The opposite twist directions balance each other, creating stable yarn that doesn't bias or twist back on itself.
Some traditions and techniques specifically use S-twist singles or Z-twist plied yarn, but Z-twist singles plied with S-twist is the Western standard.
How Much Twist is Enough?
The right amount of twist depends on your fiber, your desired yarn weight, and your yarn's intended use. As a general rule, yarn should have enough twist to hold together firmly but not so much that it kinks and coils when relaxed.
Test your twist by letting a length of yarn hang freely. If it twists back on itself aggressively, you have too much twist. If it looks limp and the fibers seem barely held together, you need more twist. Balanced yarn hangs straight with just a hint of energy.
Fine yarns need more twist per inch than thick yarns because there are fewer fibers in the cross-section to hold together. A fingering-weight yarn might need 10-12 TPI, while a bulky yarn might only need 4-6 TPI for equivalent strength.
Twist and Fiber Type
Different fibers require different amounts of twist. Short fibers (like cotton or short-stapled wool) need more twist to hold them together—there's less fiber length to create friction and cohesion. Long fibers (like longwool breeds or flax) need less twist because the fiber length itself provides structure.
Slippery fibers like silk or bamboo need more twist than grippy fibers like wool. The smooth fiber surface provides less friction, so additional twist is necessary to keep fibers locked together.
Springy, crimpy fibers like merino can handle less twist than straight fibers like mohair. The crimp creates natural cohesion that supplements the twist.
Active Twist vs. Stored Twist
Active twist is twist that's currently being added to your yarn. Stored twist is twist that's already in your yarn, waiting to be distributed. Understanding this distinction helps you control your spinning.
When you pinch your fiber while spinning, you're preventing active twist from entering the fiber—it builds up as stored twist below your pinch point. When you release, that stored twist rushes into your fiber. This control lets you add twist exactly where and when you want it.
Twist and Yarn Strength
Twist creates strength by binding fibers together, but there's a point of diminishing returns. Moderate twist creates maximum strength—enough to lock fibers firmly without compressing them so tightly that they lose their natural resilience.
Excessive twist actually weakens yarn by compressing fibers and creating internal stress. The yarn becomes wiry and brittle rather than strong and flexible. For maximum strength, aim for balanced twist—enough to secure fibers without overdoing it.
Twist and Yarn Character
Twist profoundly affects how yarn looks and behaves. Low-twist yarn is soft, drapey, and lofty but less durable. It's perfect for cozy scarves and soft garments where drape matters more than durability.
High-twist yarn is strong, smooth, and durable but can feel wiry and stiff. It's ideal for socks, hard-wearing garments, and items that need maximum strength. The tight twist also creates a smooth surface that shows stitch definition clearly.
Balanced twist—the middle ground—creates versatile yarn that's strong enough for most uses while maintaining softness and drape. This is what most spinners aim for in everyday yarn.
Plying and Twist Balance
When you ply, you're adding twist in the opposite direction from your singles, which removes some of the singles' twist while adding plying twist. The goal is balanced plied yarn where the singles twist and plying twist neutralize each other's energy.
Underplied yarn retains too much singles twist and will bias in knitted fabric, creating diagonal distortion. Overplied yarn has too much plying twist and will bias in the opposite direction. Balanced yarn hangs straight and creates even, non-biasing fabric.
To test ply balance, let a length of plied yarn hang freely. It should hang straight without twisting. If it twists, you need to adjust your plying twist—add more if it twists in the singles direction, less if it twists in the plying direction.
Twist Angle
Twist angle is the angle at which fibers spiral around the yarn core. Low twist creates a shallow angle (fibers nearly parallel to the yarn). High twist creates a steep angle (fibers nearly perpendicular to the yarn).
Twist angle affects yarn appearance and performance. Shallow angles create smooth, lustrous yarn that shows fiber character. Steep angles create textured, matte yarn that's very strong but less soft. Most yarn falls somewhere in the middle.
Controlling Twist Consistency
Consistent twist creates consistent yarn. On a wheel, maintain steady treadling speed and consistent drafting speed. Faster treadling or slower drafting adds more twist. Slower treadling or faster drafting adds less twist.
On a spindle, give consistent spins and draft consistent lengths between spins. Count your spins if needed—three spins per draft, or five spins, whatever creates the twist level you want. Consistency comes from rhythm and repetition.
